...and then, we held hands — Review

...and then, we held hands

I demoed this one relentlessly the fall it came out, standing behind a table at BGG Con running it for stranger after stranger, and I still think about how strange it felt to teach a game you're not allowed to talk during. You get handed two players who can each only see half the board, a handful of emotion cards, and the instruction to move a shared piece toward some kind of resolution without saying a word about how. Most people looked panicked for the first minute and then went quiet in a different way, the kind of quiet where you're actually paying attention to another person instead of waiting for your turn. That's the thing it does well, and it does it almost immediately. The nonverbal cooperation forces a kind of attentiveness most games never ask for. You start reading a stranger's hesitation the way you'd read a friend's, just from which card they're not playing yet. Where it lost me over dozens and dozens of demo plays was staying power. The mechanism that makes it interesting the first time, the silence, the guessing, the small relief of finally understanding what your partner needs, doesn't really deepen with repetition. It's the same insight every play, just with different colors. Great as a fifteen-minute experience to hand someone at a convention table. Less great as something I'd pull off my own shelf on a random Tuesday. I still respect what it's doing more than I enjoy actually playing it these days, which is a strange place for a game to sit with me after all those hours behind that table..

About this shelf

Hi, I'm Norman — this is my personal board game collection tracker: every game I own, every session I've logged, and honest reviews as I write them. I built it to keep an accurate record for myself, and to give other hobbyists something real to compare notes against.
